Signs as Sounds: Occupy Wall Street

Organized by The Public School NY + Recess
Facilitated by Christine Sun Kim + Maia Murphy
Recess on Grand St., NYC
November 3, 2011

Signs as Sounds began with an investigation of the hand-painted sign, which has arguably become an even more powerful form of communication than the voice at OWS.  We debated about the role of authority and transmission of information in forms of communication occurring in real time across a great accumulation of people and through the media to a broader audience. The participants with an interest or association with OWS made their own signs and after they cut the words out, Sun Kim and Murphy led them into a series of vocal exercises as a choir to tune out taught speech and linguistic machinery.
