MoMA PS1 presents the fourth iteration of its landmark exhibition series, begun as a collaboration with The Museum of Modern Art in 2000. Recurring every five years, the exhibition has traditionally showcased the work of emerging artists living and working in the New York metropolitan area.
... In Game of Skill 2.0, audiences are invited to listen to a reading of a text about he future written by Kim and voiced by a museum intern. The text is audible by means of a handheld device that is designed to be audible when held properly. Kim creates a pathway that, in concert with the game's console, causes the device to emit sound at a pace proportional to the participant's movement. Performed forward or backward, such movement physically enacts the process of "scrubbing," by which one fast forwards or rewinds through a recording. Requiring the exertion of a special effort on the part of the listener to achieve comprehension, Kim's work de-familiarizes and makes explicit the particular form of labor involved in listening, which is often regarded as a passive activity.
